Once upon a time (like in 2008) there were plans for a live-action Justice League movie. It was supposed to be directed by George Miller (Mad Max) and star Adam Brody as the flash, Armie Hammer as Batman and Megan Gale (Megan Fox wannabe) as Wonder Woman. The project, titled Justice League: Mortal took great interest to folks on the net who criticized the direction the film was taking. In addition to having nothing to do with the continuity that the previous Batman and Superman films set fourth, the choice to recast the iconic heroes with young actors made nerds shake their fist in a angry fury. Nobody wanted a “Justice League: The Teenage Years”.
Well, luckily thanks to the writers strike (memba that) and getting booted from austrilia (where production was to take place) the film got shelved.
So, us fans dodged a bullet with that one (thank you writers strike). Now, we of course want a Justice League movie. We just want it done right. And, you’d think with Marvels “The Avengers” coming out it 2011 DC would kick a film into gear. Well, unfortunately it looks like DC and Warner Bros. blew their load on Justice League: Mortal, because there are currently no plans for a Justice League movie or at-least anytime soon.
Diane Nelson has told IGN that DC have no intention of following in the footsteps of Marvel Studios and will instead focus on “standalone experiences” rather than anything like The Avengers…
“People make an assumption that we’re going to mirror Marvel’s strategy, for example with Avengers,” the President of DC Entertainment told IGN Movies in an interview earlier today. “We do have a very different attitude about how you build a content slate. And it isn’t necessarily about connecting those properties together to build into a single thing.”
And if that wasn’t seemingly proof enough that they have no intention of making a Justice League movie anytime soon, Nelson added: “We think we’ve got great stories and characters that will lend themselves to great standalone experiences, and that’s the way we’re focusing on it.”
“You know, it’s funny…I really enjoy the healthy competition that exists but also the competition that people assume and, to some extent, project onto us. There is a healthy competition as there would be in any business. But we do not spend our days thinking about what Marvel is doing,” she added when asked about whether or not DC is playing catch-up to Marvel in terms of its feature film output.
Personally, I’m not too bothered that we are not having JL RIGHT NOW, because it would feel disjointed. The DC superhero movies haven’t set any ground work for a Justice League movie. Beside Batman and Superman, audiences haven’t haven’t been introduced to these characters. the general public need to be familiarized to other DC characters instead of Superman and Batman. a JLA movie is just a bad idea to do right now, standalone movies of The Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow are much more better.
What do you think? Should they move forward with a Justice League movie or take their time with standalone films. Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!
