Because nerds never let up, it looks like we’re getting closer and closer to getting some kickass self-lacing shoes like the ones seen in Back to the Future II. There’s already a replica design you can get if you live in the right part of the world, but it looks like Nike designer Tinker Hatfield has filed a patent for a system that actually automates the lacing.

So maybe by 2015, the year much of the action in the flick takes place, we’ll have some full-fledged, self-lacing Nikes.

And while that is the awesomesauce, I know there’s still one question that pops into people’s heads when they hear about these shoes.

Where’s the fershlugginer HOVERBOARD, dammit?
