Marvel Studios has halted production of the the youth-oriented superhero movie Runaways so they can move full speed ahead on The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Marvel, apparently has too much going on at the moment and will take its time on the live action adaptation of the comic hatched by Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan. Runaways was set to start shooting in Los Angeles this coming February.
Peter Sollett (Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist) is still attached to direct the film project, but he’s been invited to take on another film project first.
Runaways follows a group of teenagers who find that some family secrets are bigger than others when they discover their parents are actually super-villains. Running away from their homes, the teens band together and begin a journey of discovery, both of their parents’ origins and of their own inherited powers, while trying to make up for the evil done by their folks.
While fans are certainly amped for The Avengers and Iron Man 3 there is certainly a lot of interest in ‘Runaways’. It’s one of the better comic series of the last decade. It’s like the breakfast club of superheroes. It’s such a great concept. It would do well at the box office, as it’s more of a fun adventure or superhero film involving teens. But, maybe Marvel is right. Perhaps there is too much going on. All these big films coming out in the next year or two would drown out this middle of the road superhero film.
It’s disappointing having to wait, but we can take this as a sign that the folks at Marvel really care about this property and want to serve it justice.
