I admit that I have never been much of a fan of D-Wave, a company that used to claim that it made quantum computers and now claims to make quantum optimizers. But one of the things I have come to admire about the firm is its track record in systematically answering its critics as far as the theory of adiabatic quantum computing goes.
In that vein, a recent Physical Review Letter shows that one of the arguments used against adiabatic quantum computing is almost certainly wrong. This doesn’t show that the approach will work or that it will be faster than any other sort of computer, but it tells us that D-Wave may yet produce something useful.
